Author: Richelle Mead Pages: 332 Overall: 4/5 Setting: 4/5 Characters: 5/5 Plot and Themes: 4/5 Cheers Factor: 4/5 Pairing: Prisoner Red Blend by Orin Swift This is my pairing for the entire series because it’s such a quick read. I read the first 4 books in 2 days because I’m crazy so I literally only have one pairing. Also a good bottle of red is perfect for this series. It’s one of my favorite series and Prisoner is one of my parent’s favorite bottles of wine and is quickly becoming mine. Take a Shot: Rose Hathaway and her best friend Vasalissa Dragomir have been on the run for the better part of a 2 years after running away from their school. Oh and Lissa is a Moroi vampire meaning she’s technically not undead and has magic and Rose is a Dhampir which makes her half Moroi and half human. Upon being captured and brought back to St. Vladamir’s Academy strange things start to happen that scare even Dimitri, the sexy Russian Dhampir that’s Lissa’s new guardian seeing as she is the last Dragomir from one of the twelve royal bloodlines. “The more she uses it, the worse it’ll get. Stop her, Rose.” I read this book initially back in high school and boy did I love it. I reread it roughly once a year. Obviously now that I am older, it seems more and more ridiculous in some aspects, but truthfully it’s still a great series. This first book seems a little juvenile all things considered, but I still like it. I love the interactions we get with Rose and the other students and it’s made very clear from the get go that A) female Dhampir rarely are out in the field and B) sadly they are seen as less than when it comes to Moroi and it’s compounded by their “responsibility” to protect them. Which in my opinion it’s silly that they work so hard to preserve the Moroi race when they are treated like crap and especially listening in on Rose’s inner monologue is really tough because she’s so self sacrificing when it comes to Lissa which partly is because they are friends, in part because of her personality and in part because she is Shadow Kissed and bonded to Lissa. Despite the occasionally senseless need to protect Lissa, Rose is a great character. She’s sassy and spiteful, rebellious and occasionally reckless and I love that. Her personality is so inviting to read about and being in her head is a fun place to be. I also love Mason and Mia (I promise she gets better in later books). They are really fun side characters that pose vastly different problems for Rose and her plans. I also really love Dmitri and I know I’m going to get people who don’t agree with me seeing as he’s a real adult and Rose is merely 17. Which I agree it is strange and obviously makes me uncomfortable seeing as she’s still a minor and he’s a full blown adult. However, they do exist in a less than traditional society within Moroi and Dhampir and obviously Strigoi. It’s also worth noting that they don’t truly engage in any “illegal” acts before she is no longer a minor which is reassuring. I love the school and the surrounding land and the way it is described. I also add the “night schedule” in here because it’s interesting to read a vampire book where they actually function like you would expect vampires to need to. It’s definitely not pulling a Twilight and trying to convince me that vampires that sparkle in the sun can get around that simply by moving to a cloudy locale. I think this book makes a great first novel that dips your toes in to the entire series and it’s just enough action and sex appeal that you really want to come back and read more of what Rose and her friends will get into. “If I let myself love you, I won’t throw myself in front of her. I’ll throw myself in front of you.”
